Dictatorship: Russian Revolution and Animal Farm
Dictatorship is a country, government or the form of a government in which absolute power is exercised by a dictator. A dictator is a person exercising absolute power, especially a ruler who has absolute, unrestricted control in a government without hereditary succession.
In the novel Animal Farm, the animals are abused by their caretaker, Mr. Jones. They live under a dictatorship and are forced to work hard while their caretaker remains negligent towards the animals. Tired of the dictatorship they animals are forced to live under they take action and chase away their caretaker, attempting to evolve the farm and to make it a place where every animal is equal. At first, the 'all animals are equal' tactic works, but slowly the pigs of the farm begin to rise up and take control over the farm, claiming to be more superior then the others. One pig in particular, Napoleon is more devious then the other and ends up chasing away his opponent, Snowball, marking him as the bad guy of the book. With no opponent, Napoleon becomes the dictator of the farm, and the animals are forced to live under dictatorship once more.
The novel Animal Farm is a reenactment of the Russian Revolution, in a way. The caretaker of Russia was negligent and forced his people to work hard, but was overthrown, much like Mr. Jones. Once their caretaker was gone, the people planned to evolve Russia, making it a modern and safe place for them. Eventually, people began to rise and once again take over control of Russia, this being Joseph Stalin. As Stalin was more devious than his opponent, Leon Trotsky, he had him marked as the cause for the economic fail and starvation in Russia, then having him assassinated in 1940.
P.O: I think George Orwell showed a well-represented reenactment of the Russian Revolution and the dictatorship during the time. Animal Farm definitely highlights the key events which took place during the Russian Revolution and also the key people. It shows how easily people can be manipulated with words and what fear can accomplish. George Orwell was very smart when he was writing this book, as it must have taken a lot of thought and planning.
