Joseph Stalin
Brief Description:
Joseph Stalin was named the Secretary General by Vladimir Lenin. After Vladimir Lenin died in 1924, Stalin lead an alliance against his opponent for power, Leon Trotsky, and became the Dictator of Russia. As Stalin was a believer for communism, anyone who opposed him and/or communism was executed on the spot. In 1934, the 'Reign of Terror' took place. Millions of people were sent to Soviet Labor Camps, and almost 2-7 million innocent people were murdered. In 1928, Stalin initiated the first 'Five Year Plan', attempting to make Russia more modern and making the people work even harder to modernize Russia. Throughout the time Joseph Stalin was leader, he was responsible for the death of around 20 million people's lives.Stalin was the type of man who built his success behind the scenes, much like Napoleon in the novel Animal Farm.
Analysis:
In the novel Animal Farm, Joseph Stalin is represented as Napoleon. Throughout the novel, the character Napoleon shows many similarities towards Joseph Stalin. Many of these similarities are crimes which Stalin had commit during the Russian Revolution. Both Napoleon and Joseph Stalin had devious and corrupt personalities, as they used the same tactics for 'success'. Stalin was not as educated as his opponents, Leon Trotsky, and was unable to speak at the same level of intelligence. Similarly to Napoleon, who was not as educated as his opponent, Snowball, and was unable to give speeches as well as Snowball did. Although Napoleon and Stalin did not hold speeches as their strong point, corruption and pride did. Napoleon and Stalin were both obsessed with power, and were willing to killing every opponent they had for it. Similarly, their tactics for success also involved death. In the novel, Napoleon uses the dogs to kill just as Stalin used the KGB to kill. The KGB and dogs were merely support for Napoleon and Stalin as they used fear as their main tactic for success.
P.O: I think George Orwell chose to represent Napoleon as Joseph Stalin because during the Russian Revolution, Stalin remained the leader but he was merely seeking power and control. Throughout his journey for power, he managed to kill millions of people, strike fear across Russia and still remain the leader. From this, Stalin was the perfect bad guy which represented Napoleon.
