Czar Nicholas the Second
Brief Description:
Czar Nicholas II, or otherwise known as Tsar Nicholas II served as the last Czar, emperor of Russia from 1894-1917. Nikolai Aleksandrovich Romanov, his birth name, was born on the 18th of May 1868; becoming the eldest son of Czar Alexander III.
Czar Nicholas gained power in 1894, after his father's death. Having little experience in the government Nicholas was incapable of being the emperor, but he refused to trust any of his ministers. Czar Nicholas ignited a war with Japan in 1904, as he wanted to expand Russia in Manchuria. When Russia was defeated the public demanded change and this resulted in strikes and riots. 'Soon after, Nicholas was forced to create the parliament, the Duma.'
When World War I started in 1914, Russia allied with Britain and France, but made a horrendous military mistake in 1915. During this time, his wife Alexandra began to control the government more. As there was severe food loss in Russia, slowly her advisor gained influence over her. In February 1917, Czar Nicholas lost the support of his army. In July 1918, Czar Nicholas and his family were executed by the Bolsheviks.
Analysis:
In the novel Animal Farm, Czar Nicholas represents the character 'Mr. Jones'. This is because in the novel, Mr. Jones was overthrown by the animals of the farm as he continuously neglects them and did not feed them, much like Czar Nicholas II in the Russian Revolution. Mr. Jones symbolizes Czar Nicholas as they both once had power over a large amount of land and people; or in this case the animals.
"The life of an animal is misery and slavery: that is the plain truth." Page 2, said by Old Major. When Czar Nicholas' wife began to take control over the government there was severe food loss in Russia during the time as Czar Nicholas had neglected his people, similarly to Mr. Jones. Both Mr. Jones and Czar Nicholas were brutal, during the Russian Revolution Czar Nicholas was cruel towards his opponents as was Mr. Jones towards his animals; neglecting and abusing them. Abusing their power, Mr. Jones and Czar Nicholas kept their people/animals enslaved while they would enjoy themselves, Mr. Jones is an allegory of Czar Nicholas II
P.O: I think George Orwell chose to represent Mr. Jones as Czar Nicholas because he needed to cast a so called 'bad-guy' in the novel. The way George Orwell represented Mr. Jones as Czar Nicholas definitely tied the novel together. I think Mr. Jones is an extremely important character, as without Mr. Jones the animals would have nothing to rebel against. George Orwell shows the readers Czar Nicholas' brutality through the character Mr. Jones, as they abused their power and left the ones they were responsible for to die. I like how George Orwell managed to create his own character while still representing the hideous crimes Czar Nicholas were the cause of.
