About Animal Farm: A Fairy Story
The novel Animal Farm was written by George Orwell, or otherwise known as Eric Arthur Blair. 1943 - 1944 was the time George Orwell was writing his book, in London. After several publishers refused to publish Animal Farm, a company called 'Harcourt Brace and Company' published the novel in 1946.
Orwell chose to write his novel as a fairy tale, although it contains several literary forms such as a fable, allegory and satire. A fable is usually a short story about animals which have some aspects of human behavior, trying to illustrate a a point or moral. A satire is when a human's misdeeds or stupidity is mocked through irony/wit. An allegory is when an intellectual idea is represented with characters/events in a dramatic or pictorial form.
The novel is about the animals of a farm overthrowing the original human owners and making it their own, an Animal Farm. As the book progresses, we are able to see how certain characters and events can relate to the Russian Revolution.
